It could be said that decluttering your home is akin to having a holiday; at least it is once you have finished, and can enjoy the clear, open spaces that are revealed once you get rid of some of the ‘stuff’! It doesn’t have to be a painful exercise, and can actually be enjoyable if you tackle it with the view to making it fun. Here are 5 creative ways to declutter your home.
The Hanger Trick
Deciding which clothes to get rid of can be one of the most challenging things about decluttering because when you are looking through your wardrobe its hard to remember what you aren’t wearing anymore. One way to be clear about the clothes that you don’t wear anymore is to employ the hanger trick for a few months before you do the declutter. Each time you wear something turn the coat hanger around so you know you have worn it, and pretty soon you will have a good idea about the clothes you don’t wear anymore!
Give One Thing Away Each Day
This is a really fun one for decluttering the whole house! They say one man’s trash is another man’s treasure. Giving one thing away each day, whether that is to friends or charity will allow you to declutter 365 items from your home over a year, and it won’t be a chore. You will also be able to think about the item that you want to give away next, and people will be happy that you thought of them and may even have already been eyeing off the item anyway!
The 12.12.12 Challenge
The 12.12.12. challenge is a fun way to go through at least 36 items from your home. Get three boxes and line them up side by side. Then put 12 items in the first box that you are going to keep. Then 12 items in the second box that you are going to give to charity, and choose 12 items from your home that you are going to put in the bin. Using this one will be heaps of fun and you will declutter your home in no time!
Get a Friend to Help
One way to really get the job done is to get a friend to come and help you. Your friend will be able to be objective about things and will be a lot more ruthless than you are about what you really need to keep and what can go!
Put Everything Into Storage and Go Minimal
One way to really clear out your home is to put the majority of your clutter in boxes and put it into storage for a time, and see what you still want to keep after 6 months of enjoying the minimalist approach. You may just find that you enjoy the minimalist approach so much that you don’t want or need any of the ‘stuff’ anymore, and then can think about having a garage sale, putting it on ebay, or giving it away! Fort Knox Sunshine Coast storage units are a great place to keep extra things such as surfboards and other items that you only use for the beach.
