Ever find yourself trying to enjoy an evening of dinner with friends when suddenly you are stricken with doubt? Did I remember to turn down the heat? Did I leave the lights on in the basement? Perhaps, these are only mild concerns for some people but they can add up to a lousy evening when, instead, you should have been focusing on your friends and the dinner. Or, worse, you’re sitting on the plane about to take off for a week of fun in the sun when suddenly you just have to ask yourself:
“Did I remember to lock the doors?”
Luckily, there are ways to deal with this in the form of mobile devices. We now live in an era where these handy little devices are good for more than simply playing Angry Birds. In fact, some even offer apps that would fall within the category of home automation, allowing you to do lots of different things like:
- Remotely Turning Off and On the Lights
- Adjusting the Thermostat
- Arming and Disarming Home Security Systems
For example, most people reading this are familiar with ADT Home Security, right? You see their commercials everywhere and there are tons of authorized vendors and sites like WirelessAlarmSystems.com that all talk about their systems. Did you also know there’s an app you can get for your mobile devices that can interface with their systems?
The app is called “ADT Pulse” and it allows ADT customers the ability to do everything from remotely arming and disarming the system to adjusting connected lights and thermostats to even monitoring the home in real-time. And there are tons of apps like these for all kinds of different home security providers that allow you some level of remote control – all from your mobile device.
Some thermostat providers, like Next, for example, also have their own apps that allow you to play around with the settings either while you are home or away on your iPad. It’s just another way the illusion of distance – from the home – is being dissolved thanks to the enabling features of technology both in the home and in the palm of your own hand.
