The park Hunter’s Point South Waterfront was opened in the end of the summer. The first phase of the master plan has been completed and it includes the transformation of 30 hectares of a coastline near the East River in Long Island City. This has been the largest project of a housing construction in New York city since 1970. Surrounded by water on three sides, Hunter’s Point South is a new model of urban ecology and a laboratory for innovative and sustainable design. The park and open space design is a collaboration between Thomas Balsley Associates and WEISS / MANFREDI with ARUP.
The design takes advantage of the industrial heritage of the area and the spectacular views to establish a cultural and recreational destination. Adjacent to a school and a residential building of 5,000 units, the park will offer a public front and new open spaces for recreation that are connected to the surrounding communities. The integrated design includes the infrastructure, landscape and the architecture to transform a post-industrial area that stands against the rising water levels along the East River. Hunter’s Point South is undoubtedly transformed into a new cultural and ecological paradigm.
