Wilmotte & Associates has been chosen to design a new stadium in Kaliningrad, Russia. The company has offices in Paris and London, and now they will develop the design and the construction of a new stadium in Kaliningrad. The development company is NPO Mostovik. The construction of the football stadium, with a capacity of 45,000 seat, will start in 2014 and should be completed within 4 years to host the matches of the FIFA World Cup 2018.
Kaliningrad is a Russian city with 432,000 inhabitants. This is a Russian area, bordering the Baltic Sea and it is isolated from the Russian territory.
The stadium design incorporates a flat, sliding roof that allows the stadium to host a wide range of events such as concerts, large conferences and various sporting events. On the area, surrounding the new stadium, there will be built complementary facilities that will serve the World Cup. These facilities include a lodging and media center. When the international event is over, the property will blend with the surrounding city, adding a modern flavor to the existing urban style.
